It's good to see that Toyota, but especially Nissan aren't leaving their heritage behind in regards to their respective Land Cruiser and Patrol models.

With the arrival of the Y62 platform in 2010 and the subsequent reduction in the distribution of the Y61 it felt like Nissan was concertedly pushing the Patrol towards the luxury off-road market. Sure, it's still a body on frame chassis, but there was no diesel engine or manual transmission available.

Nissan USA is crowd sourcing the design of an Armada (as the Patrol is known there) Mountain Patrol concept. While there is little chance that this set up will be sold, it's good to see Nissan nurturing the real heritage and capabilities of the Patrol Y62 platform.

Toyota UK has just started selling the Land Cruiser Utility Commercial. This is a beautifully stripped down Land Cruiser Prado that is expressly marketed to tradesmen and the like. With no rear seats, washable interior, and steel wheels, it's the height of practicality. Available in LWB and SWB versions, it remains to be seen if this model will venture outside of the UK.
